Morgan Sindall has been chosen to build a cargo facility at Heathrow Airport for British Airways and IAG Cargo.
The new building will be a warehouse handling facility for IAG Cargo’s premium products at Heathrow. With a gross internal floor space of 10,500m² it will stand adjacent to IAG Cargo’s existing cargo facilities on the airport’s southern perimeter.
A project team to construct the facility, led by Morgan Sindall, started on site in July 2017.
The new facility will handle IAG Cargo’s ‘Prioritise’ and ‘Constant Climate’ premium products. The former is a service focused on speed, and the latter is designed for the handling of temperature-sensitive freight.
The new facility will have a landside interface for freight arriving by road for processing through to an airside exit for loading as cargo. The facility will include a materials handling system installed by specialist subcontractor, Siemens Postal Parcel & Airport Logistics Ltd.
Morgan Sindall is currently delivering the groundworks / civils package in preparation for the steelworks to commence.
The work in Feb/March is concentrated on the substantial excavations required for the pad foundations and a series of 3m deep pits which are required for cargo processing; the production of the formwork and reinforcement cages for the concrete to be poured on site; the forming of the ground slab and precast walls for the warehouse and MHS, and other works associated with services in the ground.
The work is all on a brownfield site so the new building and services are being delivered alongside legacy services and differing ground conditions which can all be seen on site.
