Kier Group plc Contact

The Templeman Library development will extend and transform the existing library building to create an outstanding and exemplary library for the University of Kent.

Phase I of the scheme created an extension to the west of the existing Library comprising a variety of study spaces, a dedicated special collection and exhibition space, a passively cooled archive, a 250 seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms and a café.

The Phase II works to the central core and East will transform the south and north entrances; create new group rooms; a new support area; office space for IS staff and book storage in the central core basement.

We are currently working on Phase II of the works, which involves part refurbishment of an existing 12500m2 Library building which consists of two main parts of the building, the Central Core and the East block.

The site is located behind the University Theatre “The Gulbenkian” and within the main campus. The site is segregated by 2.4m solid hoarding and has a gateman. The Library will continue to operate throughout the new development in phases.

Central Core

The Central Core of the building involves structural alterations to remove façades and structural floors and stair cores, with a full soft strip internally. Internal works include two new internal cast in situ staircases, new installation of two main plant rooms at roof level together with a full internal fit out of all five levels of the building. New external windows and doors will be fitted to the existing facades and two new build extensions, to the South of the Central core a new four storey extension built from steel frame and curtain walling façade and an infill of curtain walling to the North side of the building.

East Block

The East block refurbishment consists of removal of the existing windows which is replaced with new curtain walling to match that of the central core and Phase fenestration installed in Phase 1. New heating will be installed to the all four floors of the building. The Level 1 of the East block will be fully refurbished to the same specification as the Central core.

External Landscaping

The scheme involves hard and soft landscaping around the perimeter of the buildings.
