Upon completion, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will ensure the capital’s sewerage system is fit to support London’s projected population for at least the next 100 years, and will tackle the issue of discharges of untreated sewage that currently enter the River Thames on a regular basis.

This necessary expansion of London’s sewer network is due for completion in 2024, and is happening across 24 construction sites in London. They span from Acton in West London to Beckton in the East, with many located on the river edge.

Located on the south side of Wandsworth Bridge in Fulham, Carnwath Road Riverside is one of the three ‘main drive sites’ – sites from which tunnel boring machines (TBMs) launch to drive the excavation works of the main tunnel.

Rachel, one of the TBM’s for the west, will launch in 2019 to tunnel 7km west to Acton Storm Tanks.  Carnwath Road Riverside will also receive Millicent, the TBM driving the 5km section from Battersea, as well as Charlotte, the smaller TBM for the Frogmore Connection tunnel in Wandsworth.

Carnwath Road Riverside site continues to progress well as we prepare for tunnelling later this year.

We have recently completed our 55 metre long launch tunnel, which will be used for the departure of Rachel, our Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that will make its journey from Carnwath Road Riverside to Acton Storm Tanks.

In preparation for our tunnelling activities we are currently installing a conveyor system which will allow us to remove excavated material from the tunnel and load it onto our barges, minimising our impact on the local road network as each barge movement equates to approximately 50 lorries.
