Oval Village is a 3.2 hectare site in the north of the London Borough of Lambeth adjacent to the Oval cricket ground bordered by Kennington Lane to the north and Kennington Oval to the south.

The northern side of the site was formerly occupied by a Tesco supermarket including customer car park and a two storey office. The southern side of the site comprises of SGN four decommissioned gasholders, a live gas pressure reducing station (PRS) and a number of small single storey buildings, cabins and storage containers which all form part of SGN’s former depot. The largest gasholder is Grade II Listed and is to be refurbished and retained on site. Whilst the northern section of the site is relatively level with the adjacent street level and gradually falls towards the rear of the existing store, the southern part of the site is retained on all boundaries and is approximately 3m higher than the surrounding street level.

The existing live gas PRS onsite is to be retained and relocated within the site and re-connected whilst existing surfaces in the vicinity of the site are to be made good where required.

Berkeley Homes are developing the site and building 1,309 new homes across seven residential buildings along with a brand new Tesco store, over 15,000m2 of community, commercial, office and retail space and one hectare of landscaped public realm. There will also be a basement carpark to service the site.

Block A, B and C are 17, 18 and 8 storeys respectively while Block D is a 10 storey circular building which will be constructed within the Grade II listed retained and refurbished gasholder frame. Block E is 16 storeys, Block F is 10 storeys and Block G is 16 storeys. The basement is predominantly car parking, plant space, bike and ancillary storage.

Construction access to the site is via Vauxhall Street, with egress from Montford Place. Appropriate hoarding will be erected to provide a barrier to the public from construction works.

Works commenced on the Demolition of Tesco in mid-2019, with piling complete in late 2019. Ground works and concrete frame will start in early 2020 along with dewatering and demolition of the Gasholders on the gasworks site.
