ISG is working on the new Hamilton School in Reading which specialises in the education of secondary-aged children with Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) issues, and who cannot attend mainstream schools. The school (formerly known as Phoenix College) is currently based in an existing building about 10 minutes away from its new home.
We are delivering the project for Reading Borough Council, supported by funding from the Department for Education. The project was procured through the Southern Construction Framework.
The new school will be able to offer 94 places, and we are refurbishing a vacant building on the site along with creating a new build extension, featuring the main hall, dining area, kitchen and other support facilities.
The existing building is undergoing extensive work, including re-roofing, re-glazing, over-cladding external walls, and creating new walls and partitions. We’ll also be fitting the school out with new IT systems, furniture and fixtures.
Outside the building, we’ll be landscaping the grounds, and also forming a new sports pitch along with external seating, paving and planting. Access will be improved and a new car park created, along with making sure the new school is secure, with CCTV, access controls and perimeter fencing.
Councillor Ashley Pearce, lead member for education, said: “The school forms a key part of our special education needs (SEN) strategy and will help improve education for some of Reading’s most vulnerable students. With Maiden Erlegh Trust now leading the school and this new site, it's a chance for the school to really relaunch itself.”
At the time of the visit, we will be in the final stages of the project, as we enter week 48 of 65. Works will include the installation of the classroom fixtures and fittings, flooring, joinery and final decorations, along with the external landscaping.
We’ll start with a presentation introducing you to our company and the project, and also tell you more about the different roles available in our industry, before taking you on a tour of the site, as you see the school in its very final stages.
