Stadler, the Swiss engineering company, officially commissioned VolkerFitzpatrick to build a brand-new depot at Gosforth, which will accommodate the new state-of-the-art trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro, set to enter passenger service from 2023.
The new purpose-built depot, which represents an investment of £70 million, has been designed to ensure maximum availability and reliability of the new fleet. It will vastly improve the working environment for employees and will become home to a wide range of activities, including preventative and corrective maintenance, overhauls and train presentation. There will be storage for spare parts and material supplies and office space for training and other support functions.
With inspection roads and pits, cranes, jacks, test facilities and a wheel-lathe, the 12-acre site, close to Regent Centre station, will feature a wash-plant to clean train exteriors and other dedicated areas for both daily and periodic deep-cleaning. The outside area will be adapted to optimise train movements, while keeping noise to a minimum for the benefit of local residents.
The building has been designed to ensure maximum sustainability and to provide an attractive environment for employees. Water recycled on site, and rainwater, will be harvested and used for train washing facilities and toilets.
Since work began on site early 2021, the team has already made great strides in the depot’s development. In May, the first stage of demolition works was completed, and track foundation works are very much underway; with most of the building work set to be completed by 2025.
Once visitors arrive at our office, you will be greeted by the team and given a site induction. From there, you will receive your PPE and be taken onto site. Our team will guide visitors around the site, showing areas that are under construction, and highlighting key areas, as well as giving a tour of the old depot area, and of the new Stadler mock-up train.
After the site tour, those from schools and colleges will be given the chance to meet key members of the team, including some of our new graduates, to hear about a career within rail. You will also get to hear from Tyne and Wear metro, and the career options available through them.
There will be a talk on any upcoming works, with the team also on hand to answer any questions.
Information on Open Doors 2022 will be released shortly
