About Prince Charles Hospital
Prince Charles Hospital – Phase 2 is a £130M Design and Build contract being undertaken by Tilbury Douglas as part of the Designed for Life Wales Framework.
The project is mainly a refurbishment project over the Ground and First Floors of the Merthyr Block with elements of new build including modular buildings for decant space, extensions, and new plant rooms. Upgrade works to existing loose surface car parks.
The hospital is situated in the Gurnos Estate, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales and was opened in 1978.
Due to the age of the building, the hospital is heavily contaminated with asbestos and therefore maintenance has been difficult over the years. This also adds complication in terms of carrying out the refurbishment works especially as it is being carried out in numerous sections/phases. This results in the project being very logistically complicated.
The project commenced in December 2020 and is planned to run until June 2026.
Activity
The visit will commence with an introduction to the PCH project. This will include the history of the project over the last 8 years including the previous two phases which where on-site between 2018-2021. There will be an overview of what the Phase 2 project will achieve and insight into the logistical complexities.
Following that the visitors will be taken on a site tour looking at several different areas of work. This will include a new build extension structure, areas of extensive refurbishment and two large modular buildings. All these spaces will be used for decant space for the next large section of the project.
The site areas will be in various stages of fit-out with some more advanced than others.
