VolkerRail is upgrading the existing power supply along Merseyrail’s 75km route.

This enhancement is in readiness for Merseyrail’s new state-of-the-art trains being introduced from 2020, which are replacing their current fleet that has been running since the late 1970s and is the oldest in the UK.

The new electric and environmentally-friendly trains, which have been designed specifically for the Merseyrail network, will be modern, safe, fast and comfortable; carrying more people, more quickly. The trains include pioneering sliding step technology and will help support the growth of the city region, providing potential to run on extended networks to places like Wrexham, Skelmersdale and Warrington.

To increase the voltage needed to run the new trains, VolkerRail has been contracted by Network Rail to complete extensive power upgrades, to increase the current voltage  as well as building three new substations, upgrading nine substations and completing signalling modifications along the networks Northern and Wirral Line.
