About Sandwell Aquatics Centre
Sandwell Aquatics Centre has been built to host one of the largest international sporting events of 2022, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Our involvement also continues after the competition ends, as the Centre is developed into a community leisure facility to be opened in 2023. This involves removing 4,000 spectator seats and installing additional leisure facilities.
The Centre has designed to be welcoming and inclusive, with facilities including a 108-station fitness suite; a women-only gym; indoor cycling studio; sauna and steam room and the reinstatement of the exiting football pitch.
For the first time, budding swimmers and divers will have their own centre of excellence where they train for future competitions without having to compromise where they live or travel further afield.
As well as encouraging health, fitness and wellbeing, the centre has impressive environmental credentials, with a solar powered hot water system set to save 10% in typical energy use.
The project team has worked closely with local organisations like Think Sandwell, Sandwell College, as well as local schools, providing work placements, mentoring and encouraging careers in construction.
