About New Welsh Medium School
Following an amendment to the catchment area YGG Pont Sion Norton and Heol-Y-Celyn Primary Schools which are both in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taff, are being amalgamated into a single Welsh language school. The existing school buildings were built during the 1960’s and are no longer fit for purpose and the construction type limits the
opportunity for re-modelling and /or extending the existing accommodation.
Therefore, the construction of the New Welsh Medium Primary School will have the capacity to accommodate
540 pupils aged between 3 and 11 years old. This also includes the provision of 60 nursery places.
The project is being delivered through the SEWSCAP 3 framework and it is currently half-way through the construction programme.
External works will include new hard and soft landscaping, a MUGA and natural sports pitch. The parking and bus drop off are being re-modelled for the increased capacity of the new facility. The scheme has been designed in accordance with BB99: Briefing Framework for Primary School Projects. The project is targeting EPC A, BREEAM Excellent and will be a Net Zero Carbon in Operation building
The new building is being constructed on the existing Heol-Y-Celyn Primary school land and the school will remain
operational during the construction of the new school.
The demolition of the existing buildings will follow the decant to the new building.
