The existing school is a circa 1950’s building and coming to the end of its design life. The local area also requires additional school places and the new building will expand the school from 1.5 form entry to 3 form entry.
The new building is pile and ground bean foundations, modular superstructure manufactured offsite with brick cladding.
The modules are steel frame construction with infill timber floor cassettes, timber stud / plaster board walls and timber roof build with single ply covering. They will arrive to site nearly complete with the exception of floor finishes, ceilings, hanging of doors, final fix M+E / commissioning and final coat painting
The school will remain live throughout the project so it has been designed and phased to allow this. Phase one involves half of the existing building being demolished with temporary accommodation installed in the playground. The new building is then built on the area demolished. During Phase two the school will vacate the existing and temporary classrooms to move into the new building allowing the remaining school to be demolished and the area landscaped.
The project is also constrained by a steep gradient across the site; pavement level is four meters higher than ground level along Carleton road. (Once complete the school will access the building from pavement level onto the 1st floor). This means we are required to install retaining walls around the new foot print and cut/fill the area
As the school and neighbouring buildings land lock the site on all sides we have had to create a ramp from Carleton road for access and egress during ground works. This will be lost as soon as the superstructure is installed so all materials will be craned in.
