Open Doors Week aims to inspire more people into the construction industry by letting them go ‘behind the scenes’ to discover the diverse and rewarding range of career paths the industry has to offer, as well as changing people’s perceptions of construction.

How do I find out more about a career in construction?

If you’re interested in a career in construction more information on different roles, qualifications and a range of case studies can be found on the construction careers website Go Construct.


When will Open Doors take place?

The next Open Doors event will take place from Monday 16 - Saturday 21 March 2020 and booking will open on Monday 6 January. Please click here to register your interest and be the first to know when booking opens.


How do I book my site visit?

You will need to log in to your account to book one of the Open Doors sites. Your account will be created when you make your first booking. You can use the same account to book other visits.


What will happen during my site visit?

You will get the opportunity to see the project, office, or factory, and meet the people who work in the industry. And of course, if you have any specific requests or interests please mention them when booking and we’ll do our best to help and make them happen.


Can you tell me about access for visitors with disabilities?

The information page for each individual site will clearly state disability access.


Can I walk around the site on my own?

No, afraid not. You will have to stay with the group you are allocated at all times.


Will the sites be safe?

Each site taking part in Open Doors has taken all steps to make sure your site visit will be safe and enjoyable. To ensure your own safety you should follow any guidance given on site.


Can large groups attend?

We encourage groups of all sizes, however due to some site restrictions larger groups may not always be possible. Please check the individual site’s information page for further information. And the earlier you book, the easier it will be to accommodate you.


Can children attend?

Details on whether children can attend will be on each site's information page, as this may differ from site to site. Please note if a site does allow children to visit, all vulnerable individuals including under 18's must be accompanied by a responsible adult. If under 18, they must also have parental or legal guardian consent.


How long will the site visit last?

An estimated duration can be found on the site’s information page, but this will vary from site to site.


Can I attend more than one site?

Yes absolutely! Just remember you will need to book each one.


Do I need to wear anything special?

We would recommend you wear sensible shoes and comfortable clothing as you will be walking around the site. It’s always a good idea to bring some waterproof clothing as well just in case! Health and safety clothing will be provided by the construction company hosting the site tour if required.

11 - 18 Year Olds

Why should I visit an Open Doors site?

Open Doors gives you the opportunity to visit some of the biggest and best construction projects in Great Britain. You could be at the top of the latest skyscraper or deep underground looking at how these projects are built!


How can I get involved?

If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian’s consent, and you will need to come along with a responsible adult so pester your mum, dad or teacher to reserve a place using our online booking site!


Can I visit any site?

You can visit any and as many sites that are taking part as you like; just use our online booking system to book a slot to avoid disappointment on the day.


What will I see?

You're going to see exactly what happens behind the scenes of some of the largest and most exciting projects in Great Britain. Depending on which sites you visit, you could see massive cranes in action, steel beams going up, the most advanced construction machinery and much, much more. You’ll see all about how people create some of the most interesting buildings in the country and many of the surprising things that go on behind the scenes each and every day. You’ll also see how the subjects you learn at school such as maths and science are used in a real life.


What can construction offer me?

There is so much more to building that you'd imagine from design and engineering through to project planning and archaeological digs. The opportunities are endless. You're going to learn about some of the most interesting processes that happen on construction sites every day. It will give you a better idea of the complexity, diversity and intricate detail involved in some of today's most fascinating projects.

Why should you visit an open doors site?

Open Doors gives you the opportunity to visit some of the biggest and best construction projects in Great Britain. You could be at the top of the newest skyscraper or deep underground looking at how these projects are built!


How can I get involved?

There is an online booking facility that will allow you to find out what projects are happening in your local community and book a slot that suits you and your class. We will always try to accommodate groups wherever we can. This can be confirmed during the booking process directly with the construction site. Make sure you book a slot for you and everyone that will be attending with you!

What will we see?

You're going to see exactly what happens behind the scenes of some of the largest and most exciting projects in the UK. Depending on which sites you chose to visit you could see; the most advanced construction machinery, a huge range of skills being demonstrated by a wide range of skilled workers such as the installation of huge steel girders, 3D building modelling in action and even the delicate refurbishment of period features.


What will your clients/students learn?

Open Doors will give you the opportunity to demonstrate how the theory taught in the curriculum is put into practice in a live construction environment. The opportunities to learn on a construction site are limitless, not simply architecture and building but a full range of activities including; archaeology, design, engineering, history, social history, community legacy, sustainability and more.
