About the event

Construction is now underway on Dorset County Hospital’s new £100 million Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit, marking a major milestone for healthcare provision in the region. Funded by the New Hospital Programme, the scheme will deliver two floors of modern clinical space, including a dedicated paediatrics area, 24 critical care beds, a mental health facility, and a new ambulance arrivals and fast-assessment zone. A link corridor will connect the development to the existing hospital, while a £2 million rooftop helipad, supported by the HELP Appeal charity, will enhance emergency access.

The start of main construction follows the successful completion of enabling works and reflects strong collaboration between the Trust, the New Hospital Programme and project partners. The facility—due to open in 2027—will also benefit from Dorset County Hospital Charity’s £2.5 million appeal for enhanced spaces, including overnight accommodation for relatives and staff.

Activities

Visitors will begin the event with a short induction and health and safety briefing to ensure everyone understands the site rules, required protective equipment and safe working practices. This introduction will outline key hazards, restricted areas and the procedures to follow while moving around an active construction environment.

Following the induction, guests will receive a high-level overview of the project, outlining the purpose of the new Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit, its main clinical features and the programme milestones achieved to date. The team will explain how the works are being delivered, the partnerships involved and what the next stages of construction will involve.

The visit will conclude with a guided site tour, giving attendees the opportunity to observe progress first-hand and see how the new building is taking shape. Staff will be on hand throughout to answer questions and offer further insight into the project’s development.
