Network Rail is adapting the existing freight yard at Springs Branch, next to the West Coast main line, creating a brand new facility to stable and maintain 24 electric and eight diesel trains.
The upgrade, which is planned for completion in December 2019, is part of the Great North Rail Project – a railway industry team effort to transform train travel for customers across the north.
With the number of passengers set to double in the north over the next 25 years, more depots are needed to enable the more frequent services and additional trains planned by 2020. The new train depot will provide more flexibility for Northern to move their trains across the north overnight in preparation for services the next day.
VolkerRail has been appointed as principal contractor for this project and will complete all upgrades to the current sidings, including:
* Track reconstruction and installation, including S&C
* Overhead line electrification works to parts of the sidings
* Removal of redundant sidings
* Renewal of the entry and exit to the depot.
* Infrastructure works to house an additional eight vehicles for TOC
* Signalling works, including construction of signal box and a TRUST terminal connection
You will be greeted by a member of the team upon arrival and will be invited to watch a short introductory presentation about company and the project.
There will then be an induction and safety briefing, before heading out on foot to take a tour of the site, from the compound and down to the new sidings. (TVPs will need to be completed in advance - PPE will be provided)
Along the tour you will be shown key work site areas, outlining completed works and the engineering behind each.
When arriving at the sidings, you will get a tour of the compound and shown key instruments used, and provided with real life exercises, using these instruments.
When back at the compound lunch will be provided, followed by talks from the projects key engineering team, where you can ask questions and learn more about a career within the rail industry.
Car park is located at the top of the compound.
