About the event

Project Description & Keltbray’s Work

St. Helen’s Tower located opposite of St. Marys Axe (The Gherkin) was built in the late 1960s. Following the Baltic Exchange bombings in 1992 the building, along with surrounding structures faced significant damage. This resulted in a significant remodel of the superstructure.

The existing structure is approximately 118m high from ground level and 38 meters square on plan with central reinforced concrete core, which is approximately 15m x 23m on plan. The core supports 12 cantilevered frames each consisting of a downward raker and a horizontal strut. This hanging system is present at the top of the building and at approximately half height, with each system supporting approximately half of the typical floors.

Scope of works consists of:

  • Erection of site hoardings, gates & installation of crossovers
  • Isolation of existing services and installation of temporary supplies
  • Removal of asbestos as identified within asbestos surveys from B5 – Level 23 & Top and middle plantrooms (including air plenums)
  • Soft strip to typical floors, basements and plant rooms.
  • Construction of tower crane gravity base
  • Erection of tower crane
  • Design & installation of temporary works associated with tower crane ties, hoist loads and ties, scaffold loads and ties, main tower propping (roof to basement) and cutting sequence of existing hangers
  • Erection of scaffold
  • Demolition of main tower – Roof to GF (Tower is a top and middle hung structure)
  • Structural investigations to basement levels

Keltbray started on site in August 2024 and is currently working on the main demolition scope, with a programme duration of 107 weeks.

Activities

Visitors will be able to see and observe the ongoing demolition works and get an understanding of how Keltbray will be delivering the demolition sequence.

Once the visitors arrive to site, they will be met by the management team who will provide PPE for each delegate. After this, we will go through an introduction of the project ahead of a full site tour.

Our team will outline how they came to work within the construction industry and advise on their experiences to date. A representative from the project team will be on hand to explain the project deliverables and answer any questions you may have throughout your visit.
