The A417 provides an important route between Gloucester, Cheltenham and Swindon
Connects the West Midlands and the north to the south of England, via the M5 and M4.
90% of the A417 route is dual carriageway, there is one section that isn’t – the Missing Link.
c.37,000 vehicles per day climb Crickley Hill (10% gradient), with approx. 10% being HGVs.
Congestion is frequent at Air Balloon and Cowley roundabouts, collisions and breakdowns are a common occurrence
Rat running through local villages is a further safety issue
We plan to build 3.4 miles (5.5km) of new dual carriageway, which will:
Located entirely within the Cotswolds AONB, adjacent to SSSIs, Crickley Hill Country Park, Ancient woodland and scheduled monuments
Environmental challenges understood early and led to the scheme vision of a ‘landscape-led highway scheme’.
On site at the moment, we have archaeology and environmental mitigation taking place. Early 2024, we will start the main construction works and start to build the offline section of the new road cutting a swath through the landscape and starting to demonstrate significant infrastructure through this area of outstanding natural beauty.
