Annsborough WwTW was constructed in 2010 to serve the neighbouring County Down villages of Annsborough and Castlewellan, with the existing WwTW at Castlewellan being decommissioned.
Since opening, Annsborough WwTW has experienced operational issues, due primarily to high levels of infiltration and storm misconnections within the upstream sewerage network.
The aim of this £6m project is to improve wastewater treatment facilities within the catchment to meet future population needs and discharge consent requirements.
Key elements of the project include, a new Inlet Works, Interstage Pumping Station, Settlement Tanks and upgrades to the MCC, Telemetry and SCADA systems.
During the visit, participants will follow the journey of wastewater through the site, learning about the challenges the works has faced since opening in 2010, particularly issues caused by storm misconnections and groundwater infiltration within the sewerage network.
The activity is designed to be interactive and informative, encouraging questions and discussion around engineering, environmental protection and sustainability, and helping visitors understand how investment in wastewater infrastructure supports growing communities and meets strict discharge consent requirements.
