About the event

University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) identified the need for a major project to repurpose the existing Brandon Unit at Leicester General Hospital to create the new East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC).

The new facility will systematically separate elective and emergency activity. This will enable effective collaboration with bordering integrated care partners to provide additional capacity for elective procedures, therefore reducing wait times across the region.

The scheme includes external fabric upgrades, including a full roof replacement, and the installation of circa 700 new windows and doors, which will in turn improve the buildings acoustic and thermal values. The extensive refurbishment across two out of three storeys within the existing Brandon Unit, which has been empty for circa 10 years, will result in the provision of a BREEAM Good rated facility, which will include:

  • Outpatient facilities
  • A café/restaurant
  • Two wards
  • Office accommodation for Trust staff.
