The Global Conservation Centre at Twycross Zoo is a £25 million development designed to transform the UK’s contribution to international wildlife conservation. Located at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire, the new facility will be delivered by Henry Brothers Construction, with major support from an £18 million award from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund—the largest single government grant ever awarded to a UK zoo. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2025, meaning the project is currently in the pre-construction phase, at roughly 5–10% completion, covering planning, design, and early mobilisation. The full campus is expected to open in late 2026.
The purpose of the Global Conservation Centre is to advance scientific research, education, and practical solutions for endangered species. The development will include a two-storey centre featuring a 200-seat lecture theatre overlooking a new Bornean orangutan habitat, specialist teaching spaces, wildlife gardens, and a cutting-edge science laboratory. A separate two-storey residential facility will provide accommodation for visiting experts and students across 24 bedrooms, supporting international collaboration. As a hub for Twycross Zoo’s expanding conservation mission, and in partnership with leading universities, the centre aims to inspire and train the next generation of conservation professionals while delivering measurable benefits to wildlife, biodiversity research, and the wider Leicestershire community.
