JOINT CONSTRUCTION TOUR at Royal Bournemouth Hospital
DARWIN GROUP – The Coast Building will feature 110 new beds across four levels, a larger kitchen and catering facility, and modular, adaptable spaces designed to meet evolving healthcare needs. Spanning 10,800 square metres, the facility also reflects a commitment to sustainability, with renewable energy supported by photovoltaic panels.
The building, was named following a consultation with the hospital’s staff, and captures the spirit of UHD’s coastal identity – representing a welcoming ‘hospital by the sea’.
INTEGRATED HEALTH PROJECTS – The Contract 8 project areas refurbishment Gross internal floor area GIFA 7,778m2 are refurbishment and reconfiguration of areas within the hospital to upgrade and improve facilities with in the following areas
Project 1: SDEC/SAU/A&R are seen as a single project, phased to suit the relocations of the Jr Drs Mess (Undertaken in BEACH works to accommodate JDM within new build 2024) and SAU move dates. The full ward refurbishments include a full ward strip out, new wall layouts and new MEP feeds. The existing courtyard area shall be reduced in size. There shall be a requirement to periodically access the Thoracic and Pharmacy areas on the ground floor to assist with the installations of the first-floor drainage. This project shall be delivered with a complete BIM model.
Project 2: Ops & Oncology, currently Lab & Pathology, are seen as a single project with no phasing requirements. The works shall consist of full strip out and refurbishment to the area including new wall layouts, removals of the existing staircases and lift shaft. The reinstatement works consists of new wall layouts and new MEP feeds at ground and first floor.
UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS DORSET – ESTATES TEAM – Responsibility for the management of the hospital estates internally and externally, maintenance of all areas and functions with needs for construction trade training and experience from Project Management to carpentry, electricians, plumbing to landscaping.
This site uses CSCS Smart Check – the only platform to verify all 2.1 million CSCS-logoed cards.
This 2 hour activity and tour is being managed jointly with the University Hospital Dorset Estate and Maintenance team, Integrated Health Projects (IHP) and Darwin Group construction companies to provide the visiting groups with an insight into building construction and operational career opportunities.
The event will provide a presentation of the current construction activities, and the careers involved in new construction, and provide an overview of the ongoing workforce and trades required to meet operational requirements. With a demonstration of Digital Modelling tools.
There will be a walking tour through existing hospital areas, the Modular build with Darwin Group known as The COAST building, the two areas being constructed by IHP that are refurbishment projects, and a glimpse of the new traditionally built building The BEACH also constructed by Integrated Health Projects with a highlight on the broad scope of careers and training routes available to anyone interested.
Educational Visits:Visits limited to educational institutions only.
Minimum age: 14 years old
Year 10 to part time, and full time students.
Accessibility:This visit will not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues or aids. It will involve walking, stairs and be access on a live construction site. PPE will be provided where required. Parking is limited so we would encourage use of public transport. Otherwise we can make arrangements for minibuses if necessary.
