The New High-Level Wear Footbridge project is part of Sunderland City Council’s £500m regeneration scheme, revitalising and transforming the Sunderland’s Riverside into the first carbon-neutral urban quarter in the UK.
The 30-metre-high footbridge will span 250 metres, providing key connectivity between the Vaux and Sheepfolds areas which will receive considerable investment in the form of new residential housing, shops and cafés, schools, commercial/industrial spaces as well as access to the biodiverse green and blue spaces of the riverside.
This scheme will rejuvenate and revitalise Sunderland, transforming it into a modern, visually striking, green city. The 250m long crossing will establish a vital link between Keel Square and the Stadium of Light, on the axis of the Keel Line public artwork, and will support the Sunderland Smart City Vision.
The site visit will include a presentation with an overview of the project. This will then be followed by talks from some key members of the site team talking about their roles, how and why they ended up working in the construction industry, steps they took and key skills they need in their careers as well as an overview of how someone in that career could progress. We will then conclude the visit with a look over the works being carried out.
