Why work here?
The UK’s construction industry has always faced worker shortages, with several roles now appearing on the government’s shortage occupation list. Part of the concern is that the construction sector is not as attractive to many looking for employment, as industries such as automotive or aerospace sectors, and is still viewed as very ‘traditional’ in terms of methodology, skills and culture. The number of new younger people coming into the industry is at its lowest for many years.
People are at the heart of our business and operations. Our approach to communities and our ability to support our clients in this area over many years is now shaping our reputation and credibility in the industry. We are now involved on schemes where social value and community engagement are paramount.
Morrisroe are committed to ensuring our projects have a positive impact on the local community. We have an inclusive and supportive recruitment approach, and we attend several careers fairs each year to promote careers, work opportunities and apprenticeships in our business.
Recently two apprentices, admitted that the perception of the construction industry was broadly the same; that for the most part we are seen as only welcoming one archetype of person. However, the reality is very different, and the apprentices said, it was “refreshing” and “a huge relief” to see the diversity that exists on Morrisroe sites.
Another said, “Of course, it is a male-dominated industry, “But it’s so diverse in terms of culture, race and really seeing the change in ratio of male to female engineers. The culture is changing in other ways, too, with apprentices bringing their own skills and knowledge to the table and more experienced staff giving them opportunities to share.
The demand for differing skills brings the prospect for the sector to modernise. There are many industry initiatives designed to attract people to our sector, Build UK’s Open Doors is one, and it begins this March, running from 18th to 23rd.
