The Somerset Earth science centre [SESC] is a school education centre built by the local quarries to support local schools.
The centre teaches on many aspects of the quarry industry including quarry processes, uses of Mendip limestone, the history of the Mendip quarry industry, health & safety, environmental impact management, sustainability, careers & industry apprenticeships, STEM in quarry industry and business studies. We also use Vallis Vale, near Frome and the Centre’s restored quarry location to teach about natural habitats, geography river studies, industrial archaeology, woodland conservation and other environmental topics. All educational material are linked to the National Curriculum and QCA schemes of work.
The visit will include an overview of the highway maintenance works VolkerHighways carries out on behalf Bath & North East Somerset Council, and the support Wainwright provides. This will then be followed by talks from some members of the site team talking about their roles, steps they took to get into the industry and key skills they need in their careers. This will be followed by a presentation on the Wainwright quarrying, asphalt and contracting business and a site tour of the quarry, workshop and asphalt plant. There will also be some road surfacing equipment on site.
Educational Visits:Visits limited to educational institutions only.
Minimum age: 14 years old
Due to activities on site, age groups would need to be 14 and upwards
Accessibility:Unfortunately, we cannot provide disabled access to operational quarries, but we do have wheelchair accessibility to the centre and adapted toilet facilities. We can discuss mobility access arrangements for field sites when you book.
