The Winchester College Boarding Houses project is the first new build project Winchester College has undertaken in a century. Gilbert Ash (GA) have been given the privilege of delivering this high-quality scheme over the next 12 months. We are currently a third of the way through the build and are on target to deliver the historic college a scheme worthy of their pupils who will take residence in the summer of 2026.
This will be the first time that the college has had student girl boarders, so another milestone achieved – great detail has gone into the design elements of the boarding houses, not only to ensure great living space, but an abundance of quality study areas and communal spaces for the students to enjoy.
The construction methodology of the build is a fairly unusual one for the UK, the frame is constructed of cross laminated timber (CLT) rather than concrete. This style of build lends itself to a more eco friendly construction method although the finished product will have the feel of a traditional build to help the new buildings fit into the historic surroundings of Winchester.
Concurrent to the new build element, GA will also deliver the refurbishment of an existing Victorian building that will house the teaching supervision. This with the delivery of new multi-use sports pitches and landscaping encapsulates the scheme in its entirety.
The purpose of this project is to show the best of what construction has to offer, a cost effective, great building that is eco-friendly giving pleasure and satisfaction to all who participated in the design, build and delivery and those who will enjoy it for many years to come.
